A Rich History Rooted in Family and Community
Doyle’s Farm & Home Ace Hardware isn’t your average hardware store — it’s a unique blend of tradition, unique offerings, and a little bit of everything else. The story began in the early 1990s when Pat Doyle managed multiple Farm and Home stores for U.S. Oil. In 1991, he became the director of operations, and when U.S. Oil decided to sell off their hardware stores in 1996, Pat saw an opportunity to plant roots in New Richmond. He purchased the local location and turned it into a family-run business that has served the community ever since.
But the story has a fun twist — the fabric and crafts department. It might seem unusual for a hardware store to carry quilting supplies, but there’s a reason behind it. In 1988, U.S. Oil purchased the downtown Ben Franklin store, known for its crafts and fabric, and merged it with the hardware location. Rather than let the craft section fade away, the Doyles kept it going — a tradition that remains a vibrant part of the store today.
What Sets Doyle’s Apart
In a world of cookie-cutter big box stores, Doyle’s stands out. Not many hardware stores can boast a cozy fabric department tucked into one corner and a pet supply section in another. It’s this quirky but practical mix that customers love. And yes — their loyal quilting fans joke that shopping for fabric under the same roof as hammers and nails can sometimes help "sneak it past the husband" on the credit card. Wink, wink.
Despite the unexpected setting, the store maintains the same high-quality standards found in any specialized quilt shop. They’re committed to offering a broad range of fabrics, notions, and inspiration for crafters of all skill levels. They offer a large selection of panels for quick quilting as well as a variety of fabrics and crafts.Â
Looking Back and Moving Forward
When asked about their challenges, the Doyle family reflects on the usual trials of starting and growing a business — from learning curves to market changes — but they’ve always found ways to evolve. Whether through updating departments or adapting to shifting customer needs, the store has grown stronger year after year.
As for their proudest moments, it’s the consistent community support and the ability to remain a locally owned staple in New Richmond that brings the most pride.
Visions for the future
In the next five to ten years, Doyle’s Farm & Home hopes to continue updating its departments, especially the fabric section, to better serve customers who feel the gap left by the departure of larger competitors. They're dedicated to keeping that small-town, personalized service alive and well.
Something New on the Horizon?
While no specific expansions have been announced, the team is always looking for ways to grow and improve. If you’re a regular, you might just notice something new the next time you stop in.
Advice for New Quilters and Crafters
If you’re just getting started with sewing or quilting, the Doyle team has a few golden rules:
Start small.
Don’t give up.
Always read the pattern all the way through before diving in.
And never be afraid to ask questions — especially at your local quilt shop.
Finding Inspiration
Inspiration comes from all corners — samples in other quilt shops, fun patterns, and even social media. Whether it’s a fresh take on an old classic or a completely new technique, there’s always something to learn.
Doyle’s Farm & Home Ace Hardware is more than just a hardware store — it’s a community hub, a crafter’s haven, and a family tradition. Whether you need a hammer, a spool of thread, or a little inspiration, the Doyles are always ready to help.
