When Kris Isaacson and her husband purchased the Thread Lab in 2023, they were taking over a business with a strong foundation. Originally established in 2017, the shop already had a loyal customer base. However, Kris had a vision to expand its offerings, leading to the birth of Fiber Lab—a space that now includes a wide selection of yarns alongside its vibrant fabric collection.
Kris, a former Digital Marketing Technology instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, was seeking a career change. Years earlier, she had developed a business plan for a similar shop when she and her husband lived in central Minnesota. Although the timing wasn’t right then, when the opportunity arose to acquire the Thread Lab, everything fell into place. They seized the moment, and Fiber Lab was born.
A Unique Touch to the Fiber Community
Fiber Lab stands out from the competition with its commitment to bright, modern, and fun fabrics. Walking into the shop is like stepping into a rainbow of color. The store boasts an extensive solids collection and carries renowned designers like Tula Pink and Ruby Star Society. It also features unique selections from smaller design houses such as Lewis & Irene and Felicity Fabrics.
For yarn enthusiasts, Fiber Lab offers an impressive selection sourced from local dyers in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan. This emphasis on locally produced fibers ensures a rich and diverse inventory that appeals to knitters and crocheters of all skill levels.
Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Growth
Like any new business owner, Kris faced challenges early on. One of the biggest was learning the names of the shop’s regular customers—a task she prioritized to foster a welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, transitioning from an apparel sewing background to quilting required her to quickly familiarize herself with quilting terminology and fabric designers. With determination and passion, she mastered the craft and fully immersed herself in quilting. Since reopening, Fiber Lab has become a thriving hub for quilters, knitters, and crocheters. Kris has carefully curated a well-rounded selection of fabrics, yarns, and tools, ensuring that every customer, whether drawn to modern, bright fabrics or more traditional designs, can find something perfect for their next project.
Within just a year of taking ownership, Fiber Lab achieved significant recognition. In 2024, it secured second place in the Volume One Best of the Chippewa Valley for Best Fiber Arts/Quilt Shop—an impressive feat considering Kris had only been running the business for six months at the time. By 2025, Fiber Lab climbed to first place, a testament to the vibrant community of fiber artists and enthusiasts who support the shop.
Looking to the Future
Kris has ambitious goals for Fiber Lab over the next five to ten years. She envisions expanding to a larger space that would allow for a dedicated classroom for quilting, as well as cozy seating areas for knitters, crocheters, and general socializing. This expansion would also make room for a broader selection of fabrics and yarns, further enhancing the customer experience.
Advice for Beginners
For those new to sewing or quilting, Kris offers straightforward advice:
Start simple.
Pay close attention to cutting, seam allowance, and pressing—these details make all the difference.
Practice regularly and embrace imperfection—no project is ever 100% flawless.
Accept that mistakes are part of the learning process. A seam ripper is a quilter’s best friend!
Fiber Lab caters to beginners with a variety of projects that are both accessible and engaging for experienced crafters.
Kris finds inspiration in her customers. Their creativity, innovative projects, and willingness to explore new techniques keep her motivated. She loves seeing completed projects and works in progress, as they serve as a constant reminder of the artistry and passion within the fiber arts community.
A Unique Quilt Hop Experience
Fiber Lab’s section of the quilt hop stands out for its incredible variety. Whether customers are looking for traditional, batik, modern, kids’ fabrics, intricate designs, embroidery, or bag-making materials, they’re sure to find something exciting. The camaraderie among shop owners and staff fosters a supportive and knowledgeable environment where everyone thrives together.
The Fiber Lab Experience
At its heart, Fiber Lab is more than just a store—it’s a community. Whether you're a seasoned quilter, an avid knitter, or a beginner looking to start your first project, Fiber Lab offers a welcoming space filled with inspiration, high-quality materials, and friendly faces eager to help. As Kris continues to grow the business, one thing remains constant: Fiber Lab is a place where creativity and community come together, stitch by stitch.
