What Began as Bakery Blossoms Into Quilting Destination
What began as a bulk food store and bakery in 2008 has blossomed into a quilting destination for rural communities and traveling stitchers alike. At the heart of The Grain Bin Market and Bakery is owner Dawn MacDonald. Her passion for quilting and commitment to her customers have transformed her business into a cozy, creative haven.
A Unique Blend of Flavors and Fabric
Originally opened as a bulk food store and bakery, The Grain Bin slowly evolved into something more. In 2011, MacDonald began adding fabric into the store’s offerings.
“We started out with just a few bolts of fabric, a few sewing essentials, and a few books and patterns,” she recalls.
Today, the store’s fabric section fills four rooms, stocked with quality materials, quilting notions, books and inspiration around every corner.
MacDonald has created a space that caters to quilters not only in her local rural area but also across many states.
“We offer good quality fabric for quilt making,” she says.
And while trends in quilting may shift, she remains focused on finding fabrics that reflect her unique style and that of her customers.
Finding Joy in the Journey
Though running a business has its challenges, MacDonald’s love of sewing has always made the process enjoyable.
“Sewing has always come natural to me,” she shares. “It is truly an enjoyable experience.”
One of her biggest initial hurdles was deciding which types of fabric to stock, hoping her choices would resonate with the quilting community. Over time, she embraced the fun of discovering a style all her own and sharing it with others.
Creativity and Community
MacDonald’s goal is simple: “To continue to offer quality fabric at an affordable price.”
Yet what truly sets The Grain Bin apart is the spirit of encouragement and joy that lives within its walls.
“A quilt is an expression of YOU,” MacDonald says. “Make what brings you joy.”
That philosophy carries through in her advice to both new and experienced quilters.
“Don’t worry about the mistake, you’re the only one who knows. Find an inspiring group of people who share the same interests — or get together with friends and learn together. We never stop learning.”
At The Grain Bin, customers find more than fabric — they find guidance, inspiration and community. MacDonald is always ready to help with fabric suggestions or color choices, but she understands that quilting is ultimately about personal expression and joy.
Growing With Inspiration
MacDonald stays inspired by surrounding herself with talented quilters who constantly push her to grow.
“I belong to a group of quilters who have far surpassed my quilting ability,” she admits with a smile. “Seeing their work inspires me to do better.”
Sales reps and customers alike offer nudges toward trying new techniques or stepping outside her comfort zone — reminders that creativity knows no limits.
Moments That Matter Most
While MacDonald can’t point to a single proudest moment, her sense of fulfillment comes in small, everyday victories.
“Each day when we receive a thank you, or a smile of approval with a fabric choice, or a completed project that a customer truly loves — that is accomplishment enough for me,” she says.
Even more meaningful are the stories of new quilters finding their confidence and pride in what they create. For MacDonald, that sense of shared joy and achievement is what makes owning The Grain Bin so rewarding.
A Place to Create and Connect
The Grain Bin Market and Bakery is more than a quilt shop — it’s a space where creativity, encouragement and community come together. Whether you’re picking out fabric for your first quilt or just stopping by for a bit, you will find plenty of fabric to fuel your imagination — and a sweet treat to fuel your shopping.
